Character Set Recognition

Microsoft Internet Explorer uses the character set specified for a document to determine how to translate the bytes in the document into characters on the screen or on paper. By default, Internet Explorer uses the character set specified in the HTTP content type returned by the server to determine this translation. If this parameter is not given, Internet Explorer uses the character set specified by the meta element in the document. It uses the user's preferences if no meta element is specified.

The original ASP rocks, I remember experiencing it for the first time back in 1996/97 when it first came out with IIS3, and being amazed at how programmable it was compared to ColdFusion. I built many an application using Classic ASP, and there will always be a soft spot in my heart for it. :)

There are a few changes in IIS7 which Classic ASP developers should be aware of.

Creating an Accessible Checkout Progress Bar

All websites (from content to commerce) should be as accessible as possible. I could get into a long series of paragraphed rants about that topic, but I’ll save that for another day :). For more on web standards and accessibility you can check out Roger Johansson’s write up.

One thing that is often overlooked in regards to accessibility and usability is the Checkout Progress Bar. This article is more of a tutorial for designers and front-end developers on how to build out an accessible Checkout Progress Bar without using hotspots or a large amount of images.

Using Text-Overflow: Blakems.com

I am sure many of you have used the css property overflow. It works great for making divs scroll or getting that pixel perfect box. Well, I was rummaging through gmail’s source code (which they have made quite difficult to do) and ran across the text-overflow property, and what a beauty this one is. I usually go to our programmer when I need to have a limit on the number of characters allowed in a paragraph or table cell. No more do I need his help with this matter.

CSS - Clearing floats

CSS - Clearing floats: "A common problem with float-based layouts is that the floats' container doesn't want to stretch up to accomodate the floats. If you want to add, say, a border around all floats (ie. a border around the container) you'll have to command the browsers somehow to stretch up the container all the way."

In Search of the Holy Grail

A recent project has brought my personal grail quest to an end. The technique I’ll describe will allow you to deploy the Holy Grail layout without compromising your code or your flexibility. It will:
  • have a fluid center with fixed width sidebars,
  • allow the center column to appear first in the source,
  • allow any column to be the tallest,
  • require only a single extra div of markup, and
  • require very simple CSS, with minimal hacks patches.
